Nafion™ perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes are based on a PFSA/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) copolymer. Widely used in electrochemical cells, they function as cation-conducting solid electrolytes. Nafion™ membranes come in a variety of grades and embody different properties, allowing designers and engineers to match membranes to their specific application needs.

Solution Cast Membranes: Table 1

Nafion™ solution cast membranes are prepared from Nafion™ dispersions. They generally are thinner than extrusion cast membranes for use in applications where low ion transport resistance is critical. Dispersion cast membranes are designed for durability in their intended applications.

Extrusion Cast Membranes: Table 2

Nafion™ extrusion cast membranes, used in applications where high strength or low permeability/crossover is required, are generally thicker than solution cast membranes. They also can be further reinforced for maximum strength and tear resistance.
